Hong Kong slipped 16 places in the rankings of the world’s most liveable cities last year due to air pollution and social unrest.
That’s according to ECA International, which ranks the world’s cities on various “liveability” factors, including infrastructure, access to medical care, housing, yada, yada, yada.
Now finding ourselves in 33rd place, it’s especially extra annoying that those goodie-goodies Singapore have topped the list for 16 YEARS IN A ROW!
Lee Quance, ECA’s Asia director, cited the reasons for Hong Kong’s fall from relative grace.
“Air quality remains a lot poorer there than many other parts of the region,” she said. “In addition, Hong Kong’s socio-political score worsened this year as a result of the unprecedented unrest there in recent months and the restrictions placed on movement.”
We think she means that whole Occupy thing, which ironically, may have actually reduced pollution in the city.
If you want to feel superior to someone though, rest assured that Shanghai is mainland China’s most liveable city at 110th place. HA!
