Pro-Beijing activist: Drop English as an official language of Hong Kong

English should be dropped as an official language of Hong Kong to help citizens shed their colonial mindset, a pro-Beijing activist has said.

According to Chang Chak-yan, a spokesman for the anti-Occupy group Silent Majority, no language should be equal to Chinese.

In an interview with the overseas edition of the People’s Daily, he suggested that Hong Kong’s post-80s and post-90s generations should cut their apron strings with British colonial rule and expel the illusion that it was successful.

LegCo councillor Regina Ip disagrees, however, claiming the retention of both Chinese and English as the official languages of Hong Kong is vital for the city’s cosmopolitan standing.

“Chang apparently has little understanding of the young people now. That’s why he could only make suggestions that will please the Beijing government,” she said.

Ooooh, snap!
