Lawmaker complains that glare from IFC windows is ‘affecting road safety’

Thank goodness our lawmakers have their eagle eyes on the important issues affecting Hong Kong society.

In a question to Secretary for Development Paul Chan, LegCo member James To brought up the issue of IFC’s windows “reflect[ing] sunlight from a low angle” into the eyes of motorists at dusk, making them “unable to keep their eyes open” and thus endangering everyone on the roads.

He also reported that the daily lives of residents of the Yau Tsim Mong district are being negatively affected by the light reflected off the windows of the ICC.

But seriously, anyone who’s ever been blinded by the Medusa-like glare coming off those windows will realise that this is actually a legitimate concern.

Mordor has the same issue.

In response, Chan said that the Buildings Department did indeed receive complaints in 2012 about the glare from ICC, but not the IFC, and that the ICC management has looked into “mitigating measures”.

Furthermore, a new guideline implemented in September of last year will mandate that glazed windows will have to have a maximum reflectance of 20 percent, meaning they should only bounce back one fifth of light shone onto them.

The new guidelines will come into effect in April.

It seems like motorists will have to just deal with being temporarily blinded every time they pass by the IFC at dusk and dawn.
