Gang of African asylum seekers arrested for dealing and trafficking in Wan Chai

An undercover police sting in Wan Chai has seen six African asylum seekers arrested on suspicion of trafficking and dealing drugs.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, police swooped on the alleged ringleader and five other men, and seized 12 grams of suspected cocaine, 11 grams of cannabis and a small amount of ecstasy hidden in a ventilation duct on Lockhart Road.

A subsequent search of a property in Yau Ma Tei turned up USD730,000 (HKD5.5 million) in cash, 21 grams of crystal meth and half a kilo of cocaine.

All the drugs seized are believed to have an overall street value of around HKD700,000.

Police nabbed the men after a three-month undercover investigation in which officers posed as buyers.

The men, aged 27 to 44, became asylum seekers after arriving in Hong Kong between one and nine years ago.

According to the SCMP, Acting Chief Inspector Chen Yan-yan said there is no evidence of an increase of drug trafficking in Wan Chai.

Maybe someone should tell him to go take a stroll down LKF on a Saturday night…
