Photographer showcases Hong Kong’s neon lights from below

Hong Kong’s neon signs recently enjoyed a bit of the limelight thanks to M+’s interactive mega exhibition NEONSIGNS.HK.

But just when we thought we’d explored every angle of the city’s artificially-lit labyrinth, someone comes along and exposes us to a whole new view.

When confronted with the “violent, personal urge to share the beauty of Hong Kong’s neon signs in an unprecedented manner,” (it happens to all of us, right?) Spanish photographer Rainer Torrado did something a little different.

The man with the undeniably cool name began shooting the signs from directly below at night, contrasting the condensed blocks of glowing colour against the unyielding night sky.

Or as Torrado puts it: “Structural wires act as a testimony of the human intervention on a dark, ruthless nature.” #LoveArtistSpeak

None of the shots have been retouched in an effort to emphasise the basic principles of photography and give an honest testimony to these oft-overlooked art forms.

Looking up never looked so good!
