As the likes of Toni & Guy gradually take over Hong Kong, there’s a worry that traditional barbers shops, in all their nostalgic glory, may die out with the older generation that still runs and supports them.
At the busiest time of year, as customers flood in to get their hair cut before Chinese New Year, Hyperbeast paid a visit to what is widely regarded as Hong Kong’s oldest barbers shop, Shanghai Kiu Kwun in North Point.
Head cutter Mr. Go has been shaving, snipping and scissoring (lol) for 55 years since coming to Hong Kong from Jiansu in 1959.
He explains to the bed-headed reporter why Chinese people like to cut their hair before the Lunar New Year and what distinguishes a Shanghai barbers shop – while he executes the perfect “egg tart” cut. Skills.
