Chief executive’s website asks you to use Netscape in 800 x 600 resolution, gives fax advice

Throwback! Netscape 1.2.

A page on the chief executive office’s website advises users that it’s best viewed in “800 x 600 resolution with Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.0 or above”.

Eagle-eyed New York Times reporter Alan Wong spotted the hilarious anachronistic note, commenting, “You can tell Hong Kong’s start-ups are really taking off when the city’s leader asks you to Netscape in 800 x 600”.

If you’re old enough to remember, Netscape was a widely used web browser in the 1990s. It was virtually abandoned by global web surfers by the early 2000s when Internet Explorer took over as king, and languished in the dark crypts of the internet until it was finally discontinued in 2008.

Netscape 6.0 was released before some current high schoolers were even born, in 2000.

As for the recommended resolution, keep in mind that the iPhone 6 Plus screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Should you want to reach the “facsimile lines” of the office, the page also helpfully reminds you that Hong Kong’s country code is 852.

Of course, the Twitterverse was quick to have a laugh at the chief executive’s expense:

We sent a request for comment to the chief executive’s office via AOL Instant Messenger. We are still waiting to hear back.
