Burma Learner

Learn about “The Ancient Civilisations of Burma” on March 3 with Southeast Asia culture expert, Professor Janice Stargardt. She will lead a richly illustrated talk on the Burma/Myanmar’s Pyu civilisation, which flourished from approximately 220BC to 1,100 AD, and her recent work acquiring World Heritage Status for some of the country’s most historically significant sites.

Get a decent dose of blood-raw, wicked black comedy theatre with “Thinner Than Water” this month. The play’s protagonist is “deeply in debt, addicted to gambling, pissed as hell, and dying”, and his three grown up and estranged kids couldn’t care less. Not suitable for under 14s, so you know it’s good!

Contemporary at the Conrad

Now celebrating its sixth Spring edition, the Asia Contemporary Art Show will once again be filling bathtubs, basins and beds at the five-star Conrad Hong Kong with all things bright and beautiful. Art for All

For something a little more grassroots (and free), check out the fourth edition of the ultra hip Chai Wan Mei Art & Design Festival. With more than 30 participants from the neighbourhood’s creative community putting on performances, erecting art guerrilla installations and leading workshops, the show promises to be anything but your average art fair.

Basel is Back

Moving into a jam-packed arty March instead of May this year, the fourth Hong Kong edition of Art Basel will no doubt be the main focus for art fans this month. With half of the works across six different sectors coming from the Asia-Pacific, and a stimulating programme of talks, this mammoth of an art show promises to be a dynamic cross-cultural exchange.

Not Another Art Show!

In case Hong Kong didn’t have enough art shows going on this month, another one has been thrown into the mix for good measure. Art Central will occupy a 10,000 square metre tent on the Central Harbourfront right before Art Basel from March 14 to 16. Expect to see the next generation of artistic talent showcased alongside some of the world’s most renowned galleries.

City Snapper

See your city in a different light, through the inspired eyes of freelance photographer John Choy. Born in Hong Kong in 1966, Choy worked for a series of local newspapers and magazines as well as the Information Services Department from 1989 to 2001. In this series, HK Exploratory Exercise, Choy obsesses over the city’s “unseen landscapes” and experimental forms of expression.

Movie Month

The 39th Hong Kong International Film Festival promises to bring the year’s most inspiring films from Asia and the world directly to your eyes. The flagship event on any self-respecting film buff’s calendar, the fest will encompass screenings, talks and awards galore.
