New online service claims to be Hong Kong’s social/dating/networking fix

The Grouvly team sharing a hilarious joke

If you’re new to Hong Kong, needing to network, looking for love, or your friends just kind of suck, Tinder and salsa classes are no longer your only options, it seems.

There’s a brand-new social solution in town that might be your best bet for taking the awkwardness out of making new acquaintances.

Based on a very similar business model to the US’s Grouper (but not a rip-off at all, naturally) Grouvly – launched in Hong Kong last month – matches groups of three girls with groups of three guys that should know each other, but don’t.

And how do they do this? By creeping on your Facebook profile, obviously.

That’s right. Once you sign up and are accepted to Grouvly – the founder told Coconuts HK in no uncertain terms that people who look lame will not be given the green light – real, live matchmakers will manually pick you a partner and a swanky Hong Kong venue at which to meet.

No swiping through hundreds of mugshots or hours of tedious online chat for you!

But the really ingenious part is as follows:

Because EVERYONE hates cringe face-to-face blind dates, you get to bring two wingmen/wingwomen, as does he/she.

Boom! A night out with your mates plus the guarantee of meeting another group of mates you’ll probably get on with.

The only catch (besides the obvious one for those who want to meet people of the same sex) is that each person (including the wings) has to pay HKD150 in advance.

That covers your first round of drinks and ensures everyone turns up at least, though.

Up for giving it a go? You might as well. If you’ve read this far you’re obviously in desperate need of friends/lovers/contacts.

Just kidding. Socialising is important.
