(Sticky) hands up! Applications open Monday for Hong Kong’s Bun Scrambling Competition

If you’ve got a head for heights, a sweet tooth and goddamned grabby hands, your time to shine has come.

On Monday, March 2, applications will officially open for this year’s Bun Scrambling Competition.

Bun scramblers, SCRAMBLE!

The annual event, the highlight of Hong Kong’s Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, will once again see nine men and three women race against the clock to grab scored buns from a huge tower made of said buns.

Think you’ve got what it takes? Good luck, because first you’ll have to go through a proper US Marines-style elimination process.

All physically fit people (no actual bun addicts please) aged 18 and above are welcome to apply to compete on May 25.

Two hundred selected applicants will then be put through their paces by the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union at a safety training sessions on May 3.

The selection of the final 12 will take place on May 10, after which it’s every man and woman for his/herself in the showdown at Pak Tai Temple in Cheung Chau.

And what do you get if you jump through all these hoops, grab the right buns and expel gallons of blood, sweat and tears to be crowned champion?

“Full Pockets of Lucky Buns.” Well worth it!

To apply, pick up an enrolment form at any of Hong Kong’s 18 District Leisure Service Offices (and sports centres for island dwellers) or download one from the LCSD website.

All must be returned by hand or posted to the LCSD at Room 622, 6/F, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, by April 2.

You can also fax your forms to 2852-3949.

Come on. This is bun scrambling. You didn’t really expect online applications did you?
