Tone-deaf commerce secretary lauds fur design competition for ‘nurturing new blood for the trade’

Fur is currently in the crosshairs of every animal lover in Hong Kong as the world’s biggest fur show took place last week at the Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Around 60 protesters marched through Wan Chai as over 200 exhibitors from all over the world displayed their prized animal skins.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) also released a statement condemning the fur trade.

So we can’t help but wonder if Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Gregory So was just flipping animal activists off when he wrote this letter congratulating the Hong Kong Fur Federation for the success of its fur design competition.

“The great achievement of the event in inspiring creativity and nurturing new blood for the trade should be applauded,” wrote So.

“New blood”? Really? We could have thought of 1,304 ways of saying that without using the word “blood”.

The letter was posted to Facebook by Gary Stokes, the Director for South East Asia for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

“Love to see him skinned alive like the animals they use, then maybe we’d be applauding!” Stokes wrote.

A little harsh, but we agree that being a “leading fur trade centre in the world” is perhaps something Hong Kong should not boast about.
