How long for your cigarette butt to decompose in Hong Kong’s sea? (INFOGRAPHIC)

Next time you mindlessly flick a cigarette butt onto the ground, keep in mind that it could end up in the ocean – where it may take up to five years to decompose.

The Hong Kong Dolphin Conversation Society posted this infographic on Facebook, warning potential polluters of Hong Kong how long it would take for their trash to decompose.

Your plastic ParkNShop bag? Up to 30 years. Your Tsing Tao beer can? A century or two.

Scarily, a plastic Bonaqua bottle would take a long 450 years to disintegrate completely.  

The next time you’re on a junk trip, make sure rubbish and recycling bins are clearly marked and accessible to even the drunkest boat party reveller.
