Videos of police interviews with the two defendants who are accused of killing and dismembering an elderly Hong Kong couple have been played in court.
Henry Chau, 31, admits killing his parents but is only pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, while his friend, Tse Chun-kei, 38, says he had no part in killing Chau’s father, Chau Wing-ki, 65, and mother, Siu Yuet-yee, 63.
Tse admits to helping dispose of the bodies.
In his police interview, played in Hong Kong’s Court of First Instance on Tuesday, Tse said he first knew Chau had killed his parents on March 4, 2013, (three days after the double murder) when Chau, with a “smile that made me shiver”, opened a plastic box that contained a head and other body parts.
Tse claimed Chau was angry with his parents because his father refused to lower the volume of the TV while he was studying and his mother embarrassed him in front of the girl he loved, causing him to “lose face”, reports SCMP.
He said he helped dispose of the bodies because he thought Chau would kill his mother too.
In his police interview, however, Chau confessed to stabbing his father in the throat, but says Tse killed his mother.
He claims the pair planned the murders for six months and that Tse volunteered to cut up the bodies and cook parts, as he thought the latter would reduce the smell.
When police raided the flat in Tai Kok Tsui in March 15, 2013, they found Chau’s parents’ heads in the fridge and various body parts, cooked and otherwise, in tupperware boxes.
Both deny murder. The case continues.
