Take cover! Newly discovered WWII bomb to be exploded in Victoria Park today

If you’re in or around Victoria Park today, we highly recommend you keep yo’ fam out of harm’s way, because Hong Kong’s bomb disposal unit are planning to blow the place to smithereens… kind of.

An unexploded Second World War bomb was discovered yesterday afternoon by construction workers building a bypass road linking Central to Tin Hau.

Authorities worked through the night to carry out a series of controlled explosions, but the bomb was not for moving.

According to the SCMP, a fourth (and hopefully final!) attempt is now scheduled for this afternoon.

Roads surrounding the area, including Victoria Road, Tsing Fung Street, Gloucester Road and the Island Eastern Corridor, will be closed off to traffic around 2pm.

This is not the first time unexpected Second World War relics have been discovered by construction workers.

Six months ago, a Japanese bomb was found in a building site near the North Point ferry pier, and in February last year, workers unearthed a 900-kilogram mother lode at a Happy Valley construction site, prompting the evacuation of hotels and apartments in the surrounding area.
