Hong Kong woman to go on trial in Australia for killing two men in 2014 crash

A Hong Kong woman will go on trial in Brisbane for killing two Queensland men in a car accident north of the Sunshine Coast last year, Brisbane Times has reported.

Rachel Wong, 31, was ordered to appear at Brisbane District Court today to stand trial for dangerously operating a vehicle and causing the deaths of Mark Smith and Steven Maher in the early morning of Aug. 21 last year.

Police reports indicate that Wong had been speeding and was on the wrong side of the road when she smashed head-on into another car, causing the double fatality.

Senior Constable Faunce-de Laune said the station wagon being driven by Wong was in the wrong lane after overtaking a another vehicle and failing to move back, despite coming up to the crest of a hill.

Wong and her passenger were taken to Bundaberg Hospital where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries. Wong has remained in police custody since.

The Hongkonger appeared at a Brisbane court today for a committal hearing and to apply for bail.

Her application was, however, rejected as the judge considers her a flight risk.

Brisbane District Court has yet to set a date for the trial.
