Matrimonial sheep to set the baa high at Hong Kong’s Spring Lantern Festival

Hong Kong’s Spring Lantern Festival kicks off tonight with a bunch of cartoon sheep in the traditional wedding garb of various Asian countries. What else?

As this year’s theme is “Double Happiness” and it’s the Year of the Sheep/Goat, it only stands to reason that the Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival would feature sheep/goats dressed all minority-like while getting hitched.

The carnival will explode in colour, boisterous entertainment and general weirdness tonight from 7:30pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in TST (Google Map).

Expect traditional performances from the Shanxi Arts Troupe, dragon dances, Chinese folk craft demonstrations and Cantonese Opera excerpts.

Shanxi Arts Troupe

If you’re under 20 and rolling your eyes right now, fear not. Tomorrow (7:30pm – 9:30pm) will see the launch of the brand new “Youth Night” (doesn’t that sound cool?), which will feature drumming performances, Korean and Japanese pop covers and Chinese orchestral music. Rad or what?!

But you don’t have to come all the way to TST to enjoy the fun of the fair. All the same guff will be going on at the New Territories East Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival (North District Park) tomorrow night, and the New Territories West Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival (Tung Chung Man Tung Road Park) on Sunday.
