Over 100 schoolchildren from four different international schools marched on Hollywood Road on Saturday to denounce the ivory trade.
The students from Canadian International School, West Island School, Clearwater Bay School and Kennedy School carried homemade placards saying, “When the buying stops, the killing can too”, as well as photos of poached elephant carcasses.
Protesters walked through Hollywood Road and Queen’s Road Central, which are home to many ivory-selling stores.
The shopkeepers were expectedly less than pleased with the attention raised by the adorable kids.
The children, aged 10 to 12, were joined by Greenpeace supporters and other animal activists.
The protest was organized by WildAid, which says this is the largest anti-ivory protest that Hong Kong has ever seen.
According to NGO Save the Elephants, 100,000 African elephants were poached for their tusks between 2010 and 2012. The ivory trade is largely fueled by demand in Hong Kong and mainland China.
