The Indonesian domestic helper who was crushed by a falling concrete block in Hong Kong last week has died in hospital.
Elis Kurniasih, 33, had been in a coma since Wednesday when a 60kg concrete sill dislodged from a fifth floor building in North Point and landed on her while she slept outside on a second floor roof terrace.
She underwent three operations at Pamela Youde Hospital in Chai Wan, including the amputation of her left leg, but succumbed to her injuries last night.
Another domestic helper who was sleeping beside Elis at the building owned by the Sunlight Employment Agency escaped unharmed.
Police are currently investigating why Elis, who was boarding at the dormitory while waiting for her next contract to start, was sleeping outside.
According to the Indonesian Migrant Workers Network, other helpers have come forward to complain about the agency’s inhumane conditions since the accident happened.
