The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) has voted Nathan Law from Lingnan University as the group’s new secretary general, replacing Alex Chow, a key figure in last year’s civil disobedience movement.
Chow has stepped down to focus on his studies.
Law won the mini election with 37 votes, while his only opponent, Jason Szeto from Chinese University of Hong Kong, secured just 14.
Hong Kong Baptist University student Wong Hon-leung and Wong Ka-fai of the Chinese University of Hong Kong will serve as Law’s new deputies.
Law promised to further the federation’s core purpose and continue to stage social movements.
Apart from the ongoing fight for political reform ahead of the 2017 chief executive elections, Law’s first order of business will be to strengthen membership after several educational institutions announced their withdrawal from the federation on the grounds of poor management.
Law was one of the three student leaders, along with Alex Chow and Eason Chung, stopped from boarding a flight to Beijing last year.
