The delicious, unpretentious and affordable Korean fusion of U-Hang

Cheese Rice Cakes (HKD98)

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – Walking into Sai Ying Pun’s U-Hang, you might expect overpriced, overly trendy Asian fusion fare (we’re looking at you, restaurants of PoHo), but we promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this one.

U-Hang serves Korean food with a unique Western twist in an airy, dog-friendly venue located on the up-and-coming High Street.

While so many restaurants charge main-dish prices for mere spoonfuls or handfuls, U-Hang delivers solid portions, sans pretentiousness.

Kimchi Cheese Roll (HKD60)

To start we selected the Kimchi Cheese Roll (HKD60), which is basically balls of rice with a bit of ham and egg rolled up in seaweed. The dollop of silky cream cheese on top provided a bit of moisture that helped keep it all together.

Here’s a close-up because it was adorable.

The kimchi comes on the side, so good luck getting that on your rice ball, but I found the ball was already flavourful enough without the pickled cabbage.

Next we had the Cheese Rice Cakes (HKD98), which, combining my favourite carb and my favourite dairy product, I could not say no to.

The dukboki (rice cakes), smothered in toasted pine nuts, mozzarella and gorgonzola, was delicious and satisfying, with the baked crust adding just the right amount of flavour and crispiness.

Bulgogi Beef Taco (HKD98)

Then came the Bulgogi Beef Taco (HKD98), which comprises of three unavoidably messy wraps.

The saltiness of the meat was perfectly balanced by the scallions and the mayo, all encased in a tortilla that was ironically the most authentically Mexican one I’ve come across in Hong Kong.

 Pork Belly Ssam (HKD168)

Finally, we had the Pork Belly Ssam (HKD168). For this dish, you make your own lettuce wrap at the table, using charred pork belly, roasted garlic, mushroom, and chives. The meat was a little salty for my tastes, but the vegetarian fillings toned it down.

To wash it all down we had the cloyingly sweet DM-Tea (HKD98), a concoction of gin, black tea, ginger, apple, honey and shiso, that was as expensive as three tacos. Almost as sweet was the Yuzu Ice Tea (HKD40), which was prepared using the traditional yuzu jam.

Drinks may not be the strong point here (unless you have a sweet tooth), but the food is good, affordable and different. In other words, it’s awesome!
