Pandaring to nature: Expert lecture to explore methods of protecting the giant panda

Love pandas? Of course you do. You’re only human.

But the lives of our beloved furry, monochrome and frigid friends are being thrown into pandamonium ever further as climate change and development threatens their ecologically delicate mountain ecosystems in China.

Tomorrow (Tuesday), the Royal Geographical Society is hosting a lecture by Dr. Andre Clewell on the habitats of giant pandas.

Dr. Clewell, an expert in ecological restoration, will focus his talk on the conditions at the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan, one of China’s greatest protected panda areas.

Like many other places in China, this once remote area is experiencing increased pressure from infrastructure investments in the development of highways and hydropower projects to help boost tourism in the region.

As the scientific advisor to Friends of Panda Mountain (we like the sound of that place) – a Hong Kong charity that focuses on projects like preserving corridors that help reverse environmental degradation – Dr. Clewell believes such ecological restoration can lead to a few more pandas in the future. Hurray!

Although China has recently published a giant panda census that reports an increase in the wild population, further efforts remain essential if we want this trend to continue – which of course, we do.

To learn more about the dangers pandas face and what we can do to support restoration projects in their name, stop by the CITIC Tower for drinks, the lecture and the promise of some cute photos tomorrow.
