A brand new development of luxury three-bedroom Hong Kong flats feature a “maid’s room” that’s not even big enough for a single bed, it has been revealed.
Pictures of the 782-square-foot show apartment at the LOHAS Park Phase III project in Tseung Kwan O show a tiny 16-square-foot box that is supposedly where a domestic helper could live.
Ming Pao Daily reported today that the room is too small for an adult to stretch both arms out inside and too small for even a single bed.
Tse Chi-kin, a certified surveyor, told the newspaper that although forcing an actual human being to live in the not-even-glorified cupboard might be inhumane (you don’t say), it complies with legal requirements (say, what?!).
He added that many developers are making maids’ rooms as small as possible so they can increase the size of living rooms and bedrooms for the people deemed as worthy of space.
LOHAS Park is built by the MTR Corporation, CK Hutchison Holdings and other developers, and will be on sale to the public soon.
If you buy one, please use that room as the broom cupboard it was born to be.
