TVB will use CGI to cover up cleavage in ‘The Empress of China’ for Hong Kong

If there is one universal truth, it’s that everyone loves a good historical, sexified drama.

That’s why people are addicted to “Game of Thrones” (which is all based on a true story set on Planet Earth, obviously), and that’s why people in the mainland love “The Empress of China”.

TVB has secured the rights to the show, which features gorgeous, elaborate costumes and a large cast of beautiful women, but it won’t be reaching Hong Kong’s screens intact.

Following in the footsteps of Chinese censors when the show was first aired, TVB will also be covering the Empress of China’s tatas, but with a touch more sensibility than their mainland counterparts.

How? They’ll be painstakingly covering up the women in the show using CGI technology, adding virtual fabric where it’s deemed necessary.

The show previously made international headlines when mainland authorities pulled it off Chinese screens for “technical reasons”, which was widely interpreted to mean “sexiness-related reasons”.

It eventually went back on the air, with a not-so-subtle change: Chinese censors had entirely ignored the directors’ artistic vision and removed all provocative décolletage by simply cropping every offending shot (of which there were many).

Thank goodness, because otherwise we’d have to see women’s body parts on TV!
