Chief executive says Lai Bun Fu chef was never head of Government House kitchen as claimed

Since the Dec. 2014 opening of fine Chinese restaurant Lai Bun Fu, their public relations team has proudly declared that their executive chef Chung Kin-leung was the former head chef at the Government House, the Hong Kong chief executive’s official residence.

“After our Grand Opening last week, Lai Bun Fu is now in full service creating dishes fit for an HKSAR Chief Executive (literally) to civilians like you!” exclaims the restaurant’s Facebook page.

(Though the restaurant, located in Central, technically opened last year, they just had their grand opening on March 23, because that’s how fancy dining venues roll.)

Perhaps not such a big foodie himself, CY Leung did not hear about the restaurant’s claims until just now, when his office became aware of an interview Chung gave.

The chief executive’s office released a statement saying that Chung’s title when he left the Government House was the rather unceremonious one of “Domestic Staff II”, and that he was not head chef of the kitchen, though he did work there.

Chung also claimed in the interview that Leung demanded staff to address his son as “master” and his daughters as “lady”.

Leung denies that neither he nor his wife ever made such a request, and that their domestic workers had called them by their names until they moved.
