Get down with the kids at Jump Cut – HK’s international film festival curated entirely by teenagers

At a loss to what the hell is goes on in the mind of a Hong Kong teenager? Now you can see for yourself, and on the big screen, no less.

Next week we will welcome the triumphant return of JUMP CUT, Asia’s only independent film festival curated entirely by teenagers.

But before you roll your eyes and click away, the content actually looks bloody decent, and there’s absolutely no Justin Bieber in sight.

Kids are still into him, right?

The six-day extravaganza, organised by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation, will bring a lineup of thought-provoking local and international independent films to some unusual locations across the city, including the rooftop of the Easy-Pack Industrial Building in Kwun Tong, the outdoor terrace of Artichoke Canteen in Ap Lei Chau, and the Chi art space in Central.

All films, including two shorts from students at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, have been selected by a committee of 14 local teenagers aged 15-19.

International offerings you should have heard of include Woody Allen’s Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award-winning “Blue Jasmine” and and box-office breaking “Intouchables”, while lesser known gems include the “Searching for Sugar Man” and “The Way He Looks” documentaries.

There will also be Q&As and talks led by some of the city’s top film professionals.

Jessica Eu, an 18-year-old Youth Committee member and young filmmaker said, “Our constant struggle as teenagers is – should we fit in or stand out? At a time when I have never felt more different from my peers, getting involved in film has become a creative release for me. Film has the power to speak to and present the thoughts of people as a collective, but at the same time showcase individuality.”

See, she actually sounds pretty switched on.

(Just kidding with the hating, kids. We’re just jealy.)
