If you’re a regular at Central’s Graham Street wet market, you’ll probably know that yesterday was its last day in operation. If not, you might have figured it out when heading down for your fish balls this afternoon.
It’s been a long time coming, with the redevelopment announced in 2007 by the government’s Urban Renewal (read: shit on heritage) Authority.
The market had been thriving for 160 years and was the oldest of its kind in Hong Kong.
The plan now is to turn the area into hotels, shops and offices… because Central doesn’t have nearly enough of those.
If you weren’t one of dozens of people lining up yesterday to get their last taste of tradition on Graham Street, you can absorb vibe of its final day in this rather poignant video by Kaiser Wong.
Sniff.
