33 mainland tourists arrested in crackdown on parallel traders

Over the weekend, the police and the immigration department arrested 33 mainland visitors aged between 22 and 75 in a crackdown on illegal employment in Sheung Shui.

The 16 men and 17 women were arrested for breaching their conditions of stay by participating in suspected parallel trading in various neighbourhoods in the Northern district, which border Shenzhen.

The authorities seized milk powder, diapers, skin-care products, food products (we’re guessing lots of Almond Roca and Ferrero Rocher), mobile phones and other electronics.

Since 2012, the government has arrested 2,144 mainland visitors for parallel goods trading, of which 215 were prosecuted and 205 jailed.
