Anonymous French street artist Invader is coming back to Hong Kong! But before the government gets its knickers in a twist and puts an army of white-washers and scrapers at the ready, this time he’s doing an all-above-board exhibition.
The secretive artist, known for his mosaic works of retro influences – such as Pacman, Hong Kong Phooey and, of course, Street Invader – had almost all his pieces removed from Hong Kong after his “invasion” in 2014.
The local artistic community was outraged, and no doubt the government kicked itself just a little when a replica of a piece they removed sold at auction for HKD2 million.
Now, as one of undeniable highlights of next month’s Le French May, Invader will host an exhibition aptly-named “Wipe Out”, bringing replicas of past invasions to The Qube pop-up space at PMQ and exploring the status of street art in the city.
They’ll also be sticker vending machines for nostalgic contemporary art fiends, with all proceeds going to Pathfinders, a charity that helps migrant women and their children in the SAR.
Just don’t slag off his work at the show. No-one knows what this guy looks like and he might spit on your sticker!
