Democracy activist who threw eggs at HK finance chief jailed for three weeks

A pro-democracy activist who threw eggs a Hong Kong Financial Secretary John Tsang has been sentenced to three weeks in jail.

That’ll teach him for wasting perfectly good baking ingedients.

Derek Chan, 25, was attending a political forum on Java Road in North Point on Dec. 7, 2013, when he hurled two eggs at the famously well-groomed (he has an awesome tash) official.

They hit Tsang right on the forehead!

Chan, secretary general of the League of Social Democrats, has repeatedly appealed against the assault conviction, claiming he wasn’t aiming at Tsang.

He even quoted Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami in his defence:

“Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg,” Chan reeled off, claiming the eggs were thrown to express his views, not to injure Tsang.

However, at Hong Kong’s High Court yesterday, Justice Derek Pang upheld an earlier ruling by a magistrate, arguing that Chan showed no remorse and that the act contained an “intention to assault”.

The SCMP reports that Chan is in discussions with his lawyers about whether to appeal against the decision again.
