Cocobites: Hong Kong foodie news for May 2015

Ode to 1890s London

Hidden in a dark alleyway off Wyndham Street, Stockton – Hong Kong’s homage to the Victorian era of English fine dining – is waiting to woo you with three new dishes: Baked Camembert, Pan Seared Sea Bass, and 24-hour Slow-Cooked Crispy Pork Belly. If you haven’t tried this unassuming jewel in the Maximal Concepts crown yet, this is the month to do so.

Stockton, G/F, 32 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, (+852) 2565-5268.

Sushi Man

Hong Kong boasts an endless list of Japanese eateries, most of which are arguably less than authentic. That is where Sushi Man hopes to come in. You won’t find it in very many reviews yet, but the brand new concept in Yuen Long has already garnered quite a reputation. Executive Chef Cupid Leung (sweet name), who spent 11 years as an apprentice in Japan, promises make you fall head over heels for his brand of sophisticated Japanese cuisine and absorbing decor. Its Yuen Long location is a trek, but it’s closer than Japan.

Sushi Man, G/F, 5 Yan Lok Square, Yuen Long, New Territories, (+852) 2285-9477.

Le French GourMay

This year’s Le French GourMay highlights the quality and diversity of the food and wine from the Midi-Pyrénées region of France. To celebrate, the Mandarin Oriental will this month serve dishes to showcase the seasonal splendours of this stunning part of the world. Starting in May, two-Michelin-starred restaurant Pierre will offer two tasting menus alongside its breathtaking view of downtown Hong Kong, while Café Causette will indulge you in delectable homemade French comfort food in its cocoon of casual fine-dining.

Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong, (+852) 2522-0111.

A Parisian Original

The steak and frites pioneer le Relais de l’Entrecôte is launching a lighter lunch version of its classic experience for those less inclined to fall asleep at work. Guests now have the option of ordering just one portion (as opposed to the usual two) of its signature Chargrilled Striploin Steak, topped with the famous Secret Sauce and served with Hand-Cut French Fries, a Baguette and Fresh Green Salad with Perigord Walnuts. You’re still going to be very, very full, but at HKD168, including tea or coffee, how can you resist?

le “Relais de l’Entrecôte”, Garden East, 222 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai, Hong Kong, (+852) 2891-9080.

Kick back and enjoy the masterfully prepared seafood selection, served in generous portions in a modern chic setting. Pan-Fried Red Clams with Garlic and Fresh Basil, and Linguine with Live Boston Lobster Pomodoro are just two of the items on deck. Happy 1st

They say the first birthday is the most special, so naturally La Locanda has invited us all to theirs! Head chef Antonio Cacciapaglia has whipped up an authentic four-course Italian menu that’s light on the wallet but heavy in flavour. New entries – such as Buffalo Mozzarella with Spinach Cream, White Asparagus and Langoustine Risotto, and Pan-Fried Cod with Black Olive Emulsion – are on offer for this birthday dining spectacle for just HKD448.

La Locanda, 4/F Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, (+852) 2785-9600.

Chocolate Heaven

Café in Hyatt Regency is kindly insisting we give into our temptations as they host a Chocolate Wonderland no-one with a sweet tooth would want to miss. Employing more than 20 varieties of chocolate from France, Italy and Switzerland, returning pastry chef Gary Lau will take us on a gastronomic journey that is part science, part art at the desert station of the famous dinner buffet. It’s a great excuse to go back for seconds!

Café at Hyatt Regency, 18 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, (+852) 2311-1234.

Cicheti at SEPA

The first Venetian bacaro concept in Hong Kong is launching a seasonal menu of tantalising Italian fare. “Cicheti” refers to the concept of bite-sized meals that reflect the mouthwatering diversity of Venice’s culinary landscape. Created by Italy’s youngest two-Michelin-starred chef Enrico Bartolini, the new dishes are designed to be enjoyed alongside SEPA’s existing repertoire.

SEPA: Bacaro Veneziano, G/F, 61 Caine Road, Central, Hong Kong, (+852) 2521-9800.

The Great American Comeback

Dan Ryan’s Chicago Grill has returned to TST, bringing the best meals from the U, S of A and those ribs back to The Kong. For the month of May, the celebratory Vintage Menu will showcase the returning restaurant’s legendary Partners in “Crime”, Potato Skins (HKD48), the Taco Salad with Shrimp (HKD200), and Key Lime Pie or a classic Pecan Pie (HKD58 each) for desert. Go relive a classic.

Jamie’s Italian x 2

Loved by the masses and despised by Gordon Ramsay, Italian cuisine specialist Jamie Oliver has been busy working on his second Hong Kong project ever since Jamie’s Italian opened with a bang in Causeway Bay last year. The new Tsim Sha Tsui joint comes to us this month, and with it, the promise of fresh dishes and a whole new Jamie-stamped vibe. Italian Nachos (wtf?), Superfood Salad, Chicken al Mattone, and Lobster al Forno are some of the new creations coming to both restaurants.

Jamie’s Italian, 2/F, Soundwill Plaza II- Midtown, 1 Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, (+852) 3958-2222.
