Hong Kong pollution exceeds WHO safety levels on 280 days a year

A new study has revealed that air pollution levels in Central and Causeway Bay exceeded World Health Organisation recommended maximums on almost every day last year – but that’s no massive surprise, right?

The study by think tank Civic Exchange and the University of Science and Technology put a monitoring device on a tram for the period of a year.

In the worse effected areas of Des Voeux Road and Hennessy Road, dangerous PM2.5 particles were found to exceed safety standards on 280 days.

Unacceptable levels were reached in Admiralty and Wan Chai on more than 200 days, in North Point on 150, and even in the quieter Eastern District on 80 days of the year.

According to the WHO, the tiny PM2.5 particles, which can cause serious damage to the lungs, should not exceed a annual average level of 10 micrograms per cubic metre.

However the levels were found to be a whopping 55 micrograms per cubic metre on Des Voeux Road.

The area around Victoria Park was less effected thanks to its better ventilation and lower building density.

Hong Kong’s domestic workers are on to something… on Sundays.
