World War II-Inspired Video Leads to Feels, Lots of Them

Presented by

Have you ever found yourself crying in public? You might if you try watching this World War II-inspired spot by TrueMoveH outside of the house. Thailand is no stranger to heart wrenching commercials, but we were hit pretty hard with this one.

We’re greeted by a typical Thailand translation situation. A farang woman and a Thai-speaking man slide a photo across the table to an elderly woman. “Do you still remember?” The man asked the pensive old woman. With a pleading follow up from the falang and some emotive music, we’re hooked.

The video has just all the trimmings to go viral. There’s beautiful cinematography, unlikely worlds colliding, empathy; an old falang cries, the old woman cries, the falang girl cries, suddenly you’re crying. Test your tear threshold and watch the video yourself here:

“Compassion is True Communication” the commercial is called, and the spot ends with that wisdom.

After three minutes and nine seconds of watching the bittersweet period piece, you’re going to agree with that statement. Couldn’t we all show a little empathy and communicate more genuinely with those around us? Yes, the answer is yes.

Sure we all get up for the elderly on the BTS — or we know we’re supposed to — but surely there’s more we can do.

You don’t have to be a World War II prisoner of war or a courageous young maiden breaking all of the rules for the sake of humanity. It can be way easier than that, although big points to you if you fit either one of those examples.

Maybe we should follow TrueMoveH’s suit and think about charity to give that compassion thing a try.

The True Meaning of Giving is already doing a lot in addition to making us tear up a little at our desks. The company already works with Unicef and Red Cross Thailand, just to name a few of the notable collaborations. But if you need to start small, giving up your seat on the BTS will do.
