A retired educator finally got taught a lesson yesterday when a Hong Kong court sentenced him to a three-month jail term for molesting a minor.
Augustine Chan, 65, was convicted in March of this year after pleading not guilty to two counts of indecent assault.
He had been touching a 16-year-old female student in an apparent attempt to teach her the difference between the words for “chest” and “breast” during their English lessons.
On another occasion, Chan also touched the girl’s buttocks when he taught her the meaning of “hips.”
On delivering the verdict, Deputy Magistrate Jolie Chao stated, “This case involved a serious breach of trust. As a tutor, you exploited your position to indecently assault a relatively young victim.”
The family hired Chan back in 2011 to help their daughter prepare for exams in 2013.
And despite being present at most of the lessons, the girl’s parents were seemingly ignorant of Chan’s physical adventures.
When the girl refused to attend the sessions due to the abuse, the mother argued that good teachers are hard to find, according to SCMP reports.
The court even heard that she continued to refer Chan other students.
It was only after the girl started seeing a psychiatrist that the mother decided to take the issue up in court.
