Police preparing for unrest when Legislative Council votes on electoral reform

Hong Kong police are preparing for any eventuality when the Legislative Council votes on the city’s proposed political reform package.

RTHK reported yesterday that the authorities have categorised the voting day as “high risk”, and have drawn up plans based on experience gained during the anti-occupy “Operation Solarpeak”  last year.

Because that went so well.

The police have formed a task force made up of officers from various district to handle any impromptu protests or mobile demonstrators that may split into small groups.

Members of the task force include officers who worked during the Occupy Central protests, detectives, and officers who can gather video evidence of operations.

Though the force concluded that another mass-occupation is unlikely, they insisted they are prepared for anything.

The debate and voting on the proposal is expected to take place next month.

Meanwhile, activist group Civil Human Rights Front said it plans to surround the Legislative Council during the debate.
