While Disney’s live action version of Beauty and the Beast featuring Emma Watson is slated for 2017, we impatient mortals can placate ourselves up with a musical version to be staged at the Venetian in Macau. We’re sure whoever is playing Belle will look like Emma Watson from the cheap seats anyways.
For the unacquainted (Where have you been? Did you have a traumatic, Disney-less childhood?), it’s a tale as old as time.. true as it can be… barely even friends.. then somebody bends, unexpectedly. (Whoa that got weird, really fast.) The classic romance of Beauty and the Beast features Belle, a regular Diane Court, a brain trapped in the body of a gameshow host, and Beast, your average prince trapped in the body of a hideous creature after slighting some passerby witch.
In Disney fashion, the story involves a slew of other characters that inadequately prepares children for reality by suggesting that all household items have faces, can talk, and frequently break out into song.
The stage version – which is like the animated film, albeit on acid, since the clocks and candles now actually have human bodies – is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is stopping by Macau for the first time on its international tour.
Ribbing aside, this show should be legitimately awesome as the original cast of one of Broadway’s longest-running and highest-grossing productions has reunited for the international tour. Casual hair flip for international stops getting the best of the best, suck on that America.
