Renowned Hong Kong footballer Wu Kwok Hung passed away from laryngeal cancer this morning at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, according to Ming Pao. His family stated that he was in serious condition until 3:45am, when he died.
Wu garnered fame when he played in Hong Kong’s First Division League with teams Tung Sing, South China, and Seiko. His most notable accomplishments were achieved at Seiko, where he helped the club win 40 trophies over a span of 14 years.
In perhaps the signature moment of his career, Wu led the Hong Kong squad to a stunning 2-1 victory over China in a 1985 World Cup qualifier match, ending China’s aspirations of reaching the FIFA World Cup in Mexico the following year and sparking riots from the dissatisfied mainland crowd.
Individually, Wu also won the Hong Kong Footballer of the Year award four times from 1979 to 1982. He retired at the end of the 1986 season after an 18-year football career and was involved with sporting goods businesses.
