Lawmaker ‘Long Hair’ claims he was offered bribe to change his vote for political reform

Famous/infamous left-wing political activist and lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung (A.K.A. “Long Hair”) alleged over the weekend that a middleman recently approached him with a HKD100 million bribe to change his vote in the government’s upcoming political reform package.

Long Hair stated that he was not sure who the middleman represented, but claimed that he said the “boss wants one vote”.  Long Hair says he responded to the attempted bribe with anger and told the man to never look for him again, according to Apple Daily.

On Saturday, he admitted to the SCMP that he had made up the HKD100 million figure to make sure that the media reported on it, but maintained that he was indeed offered a bribe… because nothing wins confidence that you’re telling the truth better than an out-and-out lie.

New People’s Party chairperson Regina Ip said she doesn’t believe the bribe came from the Central Government, while former lawmaker James Tien claimed to believe Long Hair’s story, but added that the middleman likely represented parties in the financial district.

Chief Executive CY Leung has since responded to the allegations by urging “Long Hair” to come clean with the details of the story.

Leung also stated that the claims cannot be taken lightly as they affected both the people’s confidence in Hong Kong and city’s international reputation.
