WildAid debuts first elephant conservation PSA for Hong Kong (VIDEO)

Save the Elephants believes that 100,000 African elephants were poached for their ivory between 2010 and 2012. Many of the tusks end up in Hong Kong where they are either sold or shipped to their final destination in other Asian countries.

WildAid has kicked off a city-wide “Say No to Ivory” campaign to urge the government to ban the ivory trade, with local celebrities Bondy Chiu, Don Ng, Kandy Wong, Ka Jeng Wong, Maria Tang, Mandy Kwong, Scott Fung and Takki Wong acting as ambassadors.

In conjunction with the campaign the organisation has released their first PSA for Hong Kong, featuring the aforementioned stars.

“So long as the so-called ‘inactive’ or ‘personal’ ivory stock loophole remains present in Hong Kong’s legal ivory trade, freshly poached and smuggled ivory from Africa will continue to be laundered into the market,” said Alex Hofford, Wildlife Campaigner for WildAid Hong Kong.

“The only solution to the problem is for the government to close the door to abuse and corruption by legislating for a comprehensive ban on all ivory sales in the HKSAR.”
