Controversial TVB police ‘beating’ protester video wins journalism award

The controversial TVB news package apparently showing a handcuffed protester being beaten by multiple police officers during last year’s Occupy Central protests has won a second broadcasting award.

The piece, entitled “Suspected Police Brutality Against Occupy Central Movement’s Protester”, features footage that seems to show Civic Party member Ken Tsang being kicked by seven officers while on the ground handcuffed in a dark corner just away from the protest site in Admiralty.

It saw off competition from the UK’s BBC and Canada’s CBC to win Best TV News Item at the 55th Monte Carlo TV Festival.

When the report first aired in October last year, however, it caused much debate when it emerged that news director Keith Yuen cut a voiceover that said “the protester was kicked and beaten by the police”.

The resulting foray saw dozens of media professionals from the station issue a joint statement against the decision, and some, including the voiceover guy (who probably has a better job title than that) quitting in disgust.

Even so, this is the second award the package has received, having topped the Hard News category in the 2015 Edward E. Murrow Awards in April.
