WhatsApp-ening? LegCo president Jasper Tsang refuses to resign amidst leaked message controversy

You would think that the wildly embarrassing and controversial walkout during the electoral-reform package voting last week couldn’t get any worse.

And… you would be wrong.

According to reports, supposed-to-be-impartial LegCo President Jasper Tsang was discussing strategies with the pro-establishment lawmakers in a WhatsApp group before the electoral reform package vote last week.

Leaked messages published by Oriental Daily show that Tsang suggested the lawmakers delay their speeches so that the pan-democrats couldn’t control the timing of the vote.

The pro-establishment camp was keen to conclude during the day when fewer protestors would be around.

When asked at a LegCo meeting this morning if he would resign, Tsang said, “I haven’t done anything which has violated the neutrality of Legco president.”

He also apologised to pro-establishment lawmakers for joining their WhatsApp chat and causing trouble for them, and acknowledged that some pan-democrats have planned to move a vote of no confidence against him, reports the SCMP.

At this point of ineptitude, we wouldn’t be that surprised if that vote goes to absolute shit as well, though.
