Man who lived with senile mother and mentally ill sister discovered hanged after 3 days

A 41 year-old-man surnamed Chen was discovered hanged in his room three days after it happened. He lived with his mother and sister in the same Kwai Shing East Estate flat in Kwai Tsing for 20 years.

His 75-year-old mother, who may be senile, called the police last night after realising he had not left his room for three days, reports Apple Daily.

The police arrived to their flat and broke into his room, discovering that he had hanged himself. No suspicious circumstances were reported. Though no note was found, it is believed that he was unhappy and committed suicide.

Apple Daily says that his mother and sister did not seem to realise the man was deceased even after his body was found. The elderly mother told reporters that her son was “out shopping”, while his elder sister, who is mentally ill, said he was “sleeping”.

According to neighbours, the man rarely spoke to them, and charity workers were often seen visiting their flat to help with cleaning or to bring food. The man’s father lived in the mainland and rarely returned to Hong Kong.

Lawmakers and welfare workers have said that the case highlights the need for better mental healthcare and support services in Hong Kong.
