Hong Kong teenagers ‘turning away from Cantopop in favour of K-pop and Mandopop’

Cantopop, just like Cantonese, may be dying out with a generation, according to a local music academic.

Stephen Chu, director of the Hong Kong studies programme at the HKU’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures, said today’s teenagers are turning away from Cantopop and tuning into K-pop or Mandopop instead.

He added that local music culture is being replaced by Putonghua sounds.

Chu made the comments to the Standard ahead of the upcoming “Lyrics that Move a Generation: Half a Century of Cantopop” exhibition, which will be presented between July 15 and 21 as part of the Hong Kong Book Fair.

Original manuscripts of Cantonese pop songs will be on display at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai).

Go and see evidence of this dying art while you still can, we guess, though it’s probably one not many will mourn.
