A prominent Hong Kong anaesthetist is facing eight charges of professional misconduct for allegedly groping the breasts and nipples or two pregnant patients during caesarean deliveries.
Dr. Cheung Kai-sheun was reported to Hong Kong’s Medical Council by St. Paul’s Hospital in Causeway Bay, where the alleged incidents took place.
According to the SCMP, it is very rare for a private hospital to report one of their own to the medical watchdog.
At a hearing yesterday, Dr. Frances Lui, a consultant anaesthesiologist at Hong Kong’s Queen Mary Hospital, said that it is not standard procedure to touch a woman’s breasts after administering anaesthetic to measure the level of sedation.
“Nipples and breasts are very private parts of a patient. I do not feel it is necessary to do a sensibility test on the nipples and breasts. We can do it below the breasts instead of touching the breasts directly,” she said.
She added that if such a test was needed, a medical instrument should be used rather than a bare hand.
Dr Lui conceded, however, that it is still scientifically viable to do a sensibility test by hand.
The hearing continues.
