Hong Kong retiree who fixes bikes for free charged with obstruction and hawking

We all know crime doesn’t pay, but apparently neither do good deeds.

Suen Tak Fui, a retired man who lives in Sha Tin where he repairs the bicycles of anyone who passes by for free, is facing charges of obstruction in a public space and unlicensed hawking. Whaaat?

Ever since he retired five years ago, Suen has been conducting his repairs under a bridge next to the cycle track on Sha Kok Street.

He works for free and often doesn’t even ask for money towards the cost of the parts. For all intents and purposes, it seems he does this simply out of the goodness of his heart.

His efforts have naturally made him a popular figure with locals, but the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (BOO, HISS!) will have none of his “goodwill towards man” crap.

Instead, Suen’s tools were confiscated by the authorities on June 28, and he will have to appear before the court in two weeks after the hearing today at the Sha Tin Magistracy was adjourned in order to give the defence time to consider their approach, reports The Stand News.

The only concern Suen has, however, is that he might not be able to continue helping his neighbours with his selfless expertise.

Let’s all show this wonderful man our love by packing Sha Tin Magistrate’s court with supporters in two weeks time!
