‘Earfie’: The ear selfie campaign funding hearing aids for Hong Kong’s elderly

Half of Hongkongers over the age of 75 experience hearing loss. With 25 percent of the elderly population living in poverty, many are unable to buy good quality hearing aids to alleviate their disability.

But first, let me take a selfie… of my ear.

To raise awareness and cash for Hong Kong’s ageing citizens who suffer from hearing loss, local startup PhatRice wants you to take a selfie of your ear and upload it onto Instagram. Perfectly normal behaviour.

You might’ve seen such “earfies” on your Instagram feed posted by local celebs including pop star G.E.M., actor Leung Lit Wai and actress Chan Man Chi. Don’t worry, they haven’t all developed ear fetishes overnight.

The campaign works by asking Hongkongers to post their earfies along with the hashtag #canyouhearus and a link to PhatRice’s website, where you can donate to local charity Po Leung Kuk and help buy high quality hearing aids for their elderly care community.

And just like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, you can call out your mates to do the same… but this time without the fear of any awkward wet t-shirt moments.

PhatRice hopes to raise HKD50,000 in donations to buy hearing aids for Hong Kong’s poorest elderly folk. Help their campaign by taking an earfie (and donating please. You can’t just do the fun/weird part)!
