LegCo President denies article about ‘arrogant’ leaders refers to CY Leung

LegCo President Jasper Tsang has written about the pitfalls of “arrogant and egotistic” leaders, in what has been viewed as a thinly veiled pop at Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung.

In an article entitled “Leadership Qualities” posted to his Facebook page, Tsang – whose brother Tsang Tak-sing “retired” from LegCo on Tuesday in an unexpected reshuffle – said:

“A person of high calibre is not necessarily likeable.”

“Very often, on the contrary, someone with distinguished career achievements may offend and upset those whom he dealt with, if he is arrogant and imperious or recalcitrant and egotistic.”

“Those people may still be willing to follow him because they admire him for his ability, but they will not enjoy working with him.”

“If someone like this becomes a leader of a team… it’s impossible for the team to have high morale and to show initiative.”

The article came just a day after the older Tsang told the press that he is sure his younger brother did not wish to resign.

According to the SCMP, however, Tsang has insisted the article is “purely academic” and that any correlations drawn to CY Leung would be “too far-fetched”.
