Coconuts HK Weekly Planner: July 27 – August 2

Monday

In case you missed the first round of beachfront yoga at The Pulse last month, Maximal Concepts will be bringing back the event next Monday, July 27, by popular demand. Just like last time, the evening will begin as the sun sets over Repulse Bay with a yoga session on the rooftop of The Pulse, led by a certified yogi. The hour-long “flow” session will be followed by a tasty, nutritious dinner right downstairs at Limewood. More details.

If you’re too young to remember Elton John even from that Princess Diana song, we have no interest in knowing how old you are. You disgust us. For everyone else of a respectable age: Elton John is coming to town! The 68-year-old prolific singer-songwriter today announced that he will be visiting the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Nov. 24 as part of his All The Hits tour. Tickets will go on sale at hkticketing.com today, priced from HKD488 to HKD1,888. More details.

Tuesday

If Justin Timberlake rocked the whole Jesus beard thing and sang over moody, Drake-esque beats, you’d have JMSN. Hailing from Detroit, Christian Berishaj A.K.A. JMSN is bringing his own brand of acid ennui R&B to HK for those of you who are looking for a more chill summer music event. More details.

Wednesday

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum has announced that the ongoing five-year exhibit on the life of the legendary martial artist is to add a new instalment featuring never-before-seen memorabilia. The new section will showcase an autographed copy of Lee’s kung fu manual “The Philosophical Art of Self-Defense,” movie trailer reels of his hit films “Fist of Fury” and “The Big Boss”, behind-the-scenes photos from the set of “Enter the Dragon”, and countless other stills and posters spanning his entire career. See the exhibit for free today. More details.

Thursday

As in-touch art-lovers, we’ve all seen Hong Kong depicted in myriad mediums, but very rarely in the – dare we say – fading art form of watercolour. But now’s your chance to cast your expert eyes over one of the best collections of Hong Kong watercolours in the world by Toronto-based artist Stephan Yau. Yau has achieved international recognition for his mind-blowing feats of watercolour. He has been hailed as a “genius of light, shadow and reflection”, for his unique and unmistakable work depicting everyday Hong Kong life. Catch the last day of his exhibit at the Cawah Arts Gallery today. More details.

Friday

The twice-annual Restaurant Week is back in Hong Kong, starting from today until Aug. 9 (technically 10 days, but who’s counting?), with over 80 restaurants offering affordable, fixed-price menus during the period. This year’s list of restaurants includes many of last edition’s favourites, such as Peruvian restaurant Chicha, Italian eatery Isono, and Mediterranean haven Souvla. A number of Michelin-recommended restaurants also join the list, including the famous tapas restaurant Fofo by El Willy and Japanese home-style joint Youka. More info here.

Looking to rock out to a quality band, but not a fan of sweaty crowds and overpriced tickets? Hong Kong’s Fringe Club, longtime champion of budding local musicians and artists, will be hosting two talented bands at their Open Stage Rock Show on Friday, July 31, for an evening of free, solid entertainment. You can’t say fairer than free. The two bands – Carseat and Revolution – have been playing shows in Hong Kong and mainland China for years, so it’s about time you got with the programme and checked out their tunes. More details.

Saturday

Lara Merrett returns to The Cat Street Gallery to present “In My Nature”, an art exhibit inspired by her travels through India and Spain. Her experiences manifest on the canvas as amorphous and organic arrangements that project a dynamic energy through their vibrancy… or something to that effect. More details.

Sunday

Ah, Wan Chai – home to sleazy nightclubs, cheap retailers, and… fitness freaks? You heard right! The district is getting physical next weekend with the inaugural Wan Chai Sports Carnival, co-hosted by Causeway Bay’s Fashion Walk and the Wan Chai Sports Federation. From 2:30pm to 5pm on Sunday, August 2, a variety of athletic activities will be put on at the Wan Chai Sports Federation and Fashion Walk on Paterson Street. More details.
