When shit hits the flat: Couple sues after MTR-managed home floods with sewage

A couple is suing the MTR Corporation for HKD430,000 after their flat in an MTR-managed complex on Clear Water Bay Road  flooded with raw sewage.

On the evening of New Year’s Day (Happy New Year!), the family smelled an awful stench coming from their bathroom, reports Apple Daily. They discovered that sewage was overflowing out of the toilet and bathtub, and immediately went into panic mode, as one should in such a terrible situation.

They called the management, which only sent up a security guard and a cleaner to deal with the mess. Eventually, after several requests, MTR hired a plumber, but didn’t allow him to inspect the relevant pipes.

By the time the flooding stopped, it was 1am – five whole hours later.

On Monday the victims told the High Court that they suffered from injuries to their backs, legs and elbows from having to clean the mess up with buckets. They experienced vomiting, diarrhoea and bacterial infections. Both spent three days in hospital.

In the aftermath of the shitcident, the couple says they suffered from anxiety and depression, and were unable to eat in the house because of the terrible smell.

They were eventually forced to move out of the flat while it was being completely renovated.

The couple is suing the company for negligence and for delaying their handling of the issue. The HKD430,000 they are asking for includes the cost of renovation, relocation, and medical bills.
