Live music, skateboarding, cool sports performances and more at Hong Kong’s Freespace Happening

Despite not even attempting to start construction before the end of this year, the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority is pumping out events like it’s already a thing.

Titled the Freespace Happening, the Sunday, Aug. 9 festival at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade will consist of an array of arts performances, sports activities, and fun workshops featuring and targeted towards our city’s youth.

For starters, the Nike City Jam Skateboarding Competition will take place at the festival, with Hong Kong’s best boarders performing their coolest stunts for prizes (and massive props).

For the athletically inclined, there’ll be a freestyle football session hosted by veteran player Lyson Sze, in addition to a Street Workout performance and workshop, where you can learn how to do extreme acrobatic body movements with only playground equipment.

You know those guys showing off at Victoria Park? It’s probably them.

And for those who could do without physical activity outdoors in August, there will be a series of local indie bands at the music stage, including Chochukmo, Evocation HK, King Ly Chee, Kolor and ToNick. Dancing encouraged, but not essential.

Lastly, there’ll also be a handicraft market with a variety of design products and art works to buy. If you’re too cheap to pay, you can make your own DIY goodies at the green workshop, such as organic mosquito repellent. What a great Christmas present that will make!

More Freespace events will be held in the following months.
