Anti-parallel trade protester launches ‘flying kicks’ at police officer, jailed for 4 months

A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to four months in prison for kicking a police officer during a “Liberate Yuen Long” protest on March 1, reports Ming Pao.

“Liberate Yuen Long” is a social movement launched in protest of parallel traders in the northern districts near the mainland border.

The man, surnamed Yuen, reportedly launched two “flying kicks” at the police officer’s calves.

The defense pleaded for a shorter or suspended sentence, stating that Yuen last committed a crime more than 30 years ago and has maintained a clean record since then.

They also claimed that the 14 days Yuen spent in detention were extremely tough, and had the desired deterrent effect on him.

However, the judge ruled that police officers must be able to maintain law and order without fearing for their lives while on duty.

The judge also stated that attacking a police officer while on duty is more serious than a common assault.
